Course Outline (Fall 2018)

Section I:  The Stable Star
Equations of stellar structure, stellar models, The Virial Theorum, energy transfer (radiative, convective), nuclear energy generation, stellar atmospheres, how to determine stellar properties observationally (e.g binaries)
Section II:  The Forming Star
Free-fall times, the Jeans criterion, the Toomre criterion, the Schmidt-Kennicutt law, etc.
Section III: The Ageing Star
Stellar evolution, variability and instability, mass loss
Section IV: The Dying Star
Novae and supernovae, the end points of stellar evolution -- white dwarfs, neutron stars and black holes
