Student Presentations

For your presentations, I would like to allocate a half-hour per person. Please submit a hard copy write-up to me (not point form) at the same time describing the major points that you would like to make about the topic.  The write-up should be made available to all students (could be soft-copy) since these topics are potentially testable material for the final.  The maximum page number for the write-up is 5 pages including any tables and figures.  It is not sufficient to simply describe what someone else says.  Please think about what assumptions and possible errors have entered into the process in reaching the conclusions that are presented.  Are there alternatives to this point of view?  How certain is the conclusion?  Talks should be 20 minutes in length with 10 minutes allocated for questions.

1.  Streaming motions around the Milky Way and what they tell us  -- Jake
2.  High Velocity Clouds (HVCs) and their importance -- Dhruv
3.  The Gamma-ray Galaxy and Fermi Bubble -- Vincent
4.  The Milky Way's magnetic field and how it is mapped -- Alison
5.  Cosmic Rays in the Milky Way -- spectrum and origin -- Ben
6.  Dark Matter Candidates -- can our position in the Milky Way help in their detection? -- Nik
7.  The Promise of Gaia -- assess what can realistically be accomplished and what may be hype -- Connor
8.  What ALMA is telling us about star formation and star forming regions in the Galaxy -- Stephanie
9.  Inflow around the Milky Way -- Ananthan
10. The Milky Way in the context of the Local Group -- Christine
